“Congratulations, it's a girl.” The nurse said as soon as I delivered the baby.
The moment I heard her say this, I was extremely happy. So happy that I felt like hopping from the bed and holding my baby in my arms.
But practically, I couldn't do that. My stitches were still very fresh from the C-section that had been performed and my entire body was heavily sedated.
So I had to be content with the fact that soon I'll get to hold my baby girl in my arms.
As minutes passed, I patiently waited to hear my baby's first cry but sadly I didn't even hear a small whimper.
When I asked the nurse what was wrong, she hesitated to reply for a while. I asked her to let me hold my baby again, but still no reply. Getting more and more anxious and frustrated with each passing second, I decided to get off the bed and see for myself what was wrong.
But as soon as I pushed myself off the bed, immediately a few stitches tore apart.
“Ma'am please don't. Your baby is fine. She has been taken to the NICU due to preterm complications and severe breathing issues. You can see her after your stitches are healed.” The nurse said as she tried to make me sit down and even my breathing
After what she said, I simply couldn't believe my ears. It was like someone had slapped me across the face.
‘My baby, who is just born, has been admitted to the NICU? Why and how?’ I thought to myself as tears began to stream down my cheeks.
Being far from calm and collected, I just couldn't hold back anymore. Completely disregarding the fresh stitches and the concerned nurse, I limped towards the NICU in a bid to see my baby girl.
When I reached the incubator in which my baby was kept, I saw my husband standing next to it silently as his eyes pooled with tears.
Stealing a look at my baby girl as I examined the numerous tubes and needles pricked across her body, my breath hitched and my entire body went numb.
Losing all my strength, I fell on the floor.
My husband tried to calm me down but I was far away from being consoled at this point.
“As you can see, your baby's condition is far from normal. She has severe breathing issues and other prematurity related complications. She will need a few weeks of medical management along with respiratory support to fully recover. But...but it would cost INR 1200000.00.” The doctor said in a hesitant tone.
As if the fact that my baby is on the verge of dying wasn't enough, that destiny had to punish me with even more miseries than I could handle by putting a hefty price on my child's life.
I had been discharged on 14th of November, but still my baby is struggling to survive. Please come forward and help me as much you can.
Coming from a poor family, where I'm a housewife and my husband a welder, we live on scraps and leftovers, trying to make ends meet.
